CARROLL C. KENDALL UNIT | Sequim
Led by Unit Director Tessa Jackson, the staff and volunteers at the Carroll C. Kendall Unit in Sequim see approximately 200 kids a day. The unit boasts fantastic programs implemented at a national level. These programs are dedicated to building academic success, good character &citizenship, health & wellness, and workforce readiness. At the CCK Unit the following programs are offered.
- B Group: A group‑based mentoring program for boys that connects them with positive adult male role models. The program focuses on emotional support, life skills, healthy decision‑making, and building strong character through discussions, service, and guided activities.
- Brain Gain: A summer learning‑loss prevention program featuring one‑week, project‑based modules that keep youth engaged academically through hands‑on learning, creative expression, and collaborative activities.
- Career Launch: A job‑readiness and career exploration program for teens ages 13–18. Youth assess interests, learn workplace skills, explore career paths, and practice real‑world job preparation activities like interviewing and resume building.
- Club Scouts: Club Scouts is your Club’s version of Junior Staff, a BGCA program that prepares teens for the workforce by giving them hands-on experience in real Club roles. Participants learn responsibility, leadership, professionalism, and job‑ready skills as they assist staff, help run programs, and support younger members.
- Garden Club: A locally run program that teaches youth about gardening, nature, and environmental stewardship — often tied to outdoor learning and healthy lifestyles.
- Junior Rangers: A youth outdoor‑education program that encourages exploration, stewardship, and environmental awareness through nature activities, outdoor learning, and guided experiences. Some Clubs partner with community organizations or parks to offer it.
- Keystone: BGCA’s premier teen leadership program for ages 14–18. Members lead projects in academic success, career preparation, community service, and teen outreach while developing leadership skills.
- K Squad Circles: Small-group sessions that helped students practice respectful communication. Guided by simple norms such as speaking and listening from the heart, using a talking piece to ensure one voice at a time, the circles created a safe space for honest dialogue.
- L5: A girls’ mentoring group for members under age 15, known as “Lovely Ladies Learning Life Lessons.” The program builds confidence, positive identity, and supportive peer relationships by helping young girls learn essential life skills in a safe, encouraging environment.
- Money Matters: A financial literacy program for teens teaching budgeting, saving, banking, investing, and money management through hands‑on lessons and digital tools. Supported nationally by Charles Schwab Foundation.
- My. Future: A digital learning platform offering 500+ activities that build technology, media, coding, and digital arts skills. Members earn badges, participate in contests, and explore career‑ready digital pathways.
- Positive Action: A social‑emotional learning program built around making positive choices, building self‑esteem, and practicing good character through structured lessons and activities.
- Power Hour: BGCA’s academic success program that provides homework help, tutoring, enrichment activities, and structured study time to build lifelong learning habits.
- Project L.A.N.E.: A wellness program that teaches youth positive Lifestyle choices, healthy Attitudes, good Nutrition habits, and the importance of regular Exercise. Designed to support balanced physical and emotional well‑being, it helps members build lifelong healthy habits through fun, engaging activities. Our Turner Unit gym, the Lane Richards Gymnasium, is named in honor of Lane Richards, whose legacy is proudly celebrated by his widow, Karen Richards.
- SMART Girls: A health, fitness, and self‑esteem program for girls that supports healthy decision‑making, positive relationships, and personal development.
- Summer Camp: Seasonal programming that provides full‑day activities, outdoor adventures, hands‑on learning, and enrichment during summer break, often incorporating BGCA curricula like Brain Gain.
- Teen Programs: A collection of BGCA programs designed for ages 13–18, offering leadership development, social‑emotional skill building, college/career preparation, creative outlets, and teen‑specific experiences.
- Torch Club: A small‑group leadership and service club for youth ages 11–13. Members elect officers, run meetings, and complete service projects that build responsibility and teamwork.
- Youth of the Year: BGCA’s highest honor, recognizing teens who demonstrate leadership, service, academic success, and character. Participants share their stories and serve as ambassadors for Clubs and youth nationwide.
